Discovered last year's promo for church21, a church renewal initiative run within the COI by the Parish Development Working Group. It was a great found-footage exercise in a sense, as I came on the project purely in post-production.

dawsons bangor [2009]

This bit of comedy-cum-music video, produced in March, is fast attaining cult status in certain, dark circles... mediatree, working for Box42 AV directed, cut and authored the piece for the great folks at Dawsons in Bangor. They took it to their annual national conference, and it went down such a storm that the parent company slapped it up on YouTube for all to enjoy. Random.

[Note: whoever cut it for YouTube appears to have pushed the sound a few seconds out of sync in the second clip. I assure you, not us!]

george & tony do ireland [2005]

Recently uncovered this piece of work, previously believed to have gone AWOL... George & Tony... was the result of an editing project set at university, to:

(i) demonstrate capability and range with non-linear editing (in this case Final Cut Pro, my weapon of choice);
(ii) assess ability to convert and use found footage, from VHS, 16mm, 8mm, DVDs, and online sources.

It's an interesting piece: the narrative structure is definitely "experimental" and I guess if you're not from the province you might have trouble following what is going on, at least on that level. I have to admit, watching it back now, it shows me how much my skills have progressed in three years; but at the same time, I really like the concept we came up with, and how we exploited our resources.

camp alliance

For years, mediatree have worked in alliance (strangely enough) with charity Alliance Youth Works at their annual Camp. Camp Alliance is a unique, American-style summer camp packed with outdoor and indoor experiences for campers. Mediatree's part in this began with the request for a promo video, four years ago. (see bottom.) Although the production is now a little outdated, it was praised for successfully capturing the mood of camp with its rapid, handheld style, and was shown at events and conferences across Ireland and the UK.

The following year, mediatree became part of the Camp experience proper, with the commission to run four workshops throughout the week, and create 'Camp Radio' - a 45 minute daily internal broadcast, with the content generated solely by the Campers themselves. Two years on, and demand led to the creation of simultaneous web content, all under the banner of 'Camp Media.' mediatree supplied the audio-visual equipment used by Campers in the creation of daily 'vodcasts', which formed part of 'The Camp Quibbler'. By working in alliance with AYW (and their web designer and Quibbler tutor!) mediatree looks forward to even more new growth next year. The content generated by Campers not only provides lasting memories for themselves, but sits cleanly alongside the promotional video and photography that mediatree continues to generate for Camp.

Sample some of the camper's work for yourself! The Camp Quibbler contains the daily podcasts (downloadable as .mp3s) the vodcasts (viewable as the main headline in each daily edition) and samples of some of the photography captured by ourselves. There's even a free Camp Radio ringtone!

noir [2007]

noir was an instant hit, created as the final project for the Film course at QUB, and without question stole all the laughs in its first showcase. As it is still screened (most recently, as part of a landmark showcase at the QFT in Belfast, celebrating the cream of locally produced shorts) the film itself cannot be hosted online, but below are a series of stills.

As a satire on both classic American cinema, and thoroughly Irish thinking, noir has several strings to its bow. It was the first student piece from QUB to be shot entirely in HD, and entirely in black and white; it featured both local professional actors and an unknown in the lead; and was shot on locations across Belfast. mediatree lays claim to the Director of Photography credit, and with great pride as it is clear that the entire piece would be made or broken by the authenticity and accuracy of the cinematography.

a shaggy dog's tale [2008]

The prize-winning A Shaggy Dog's Tale: The Reflections of Puddles T. Dawg was created as part of the PGCE Media Studies option at UU. Successfully walking a path between farce and genuine reflection, it went down a storm and was given repeated airings throughout the remainder of the course.

patrick [2007]

Patrick was an award-winning film created for the inter-chaplaincy St. Patrick's Day festival at QUB, intended to lampoon the competition itself. The competition was actually abandoned, as apparently to award the film would undermine the festival. However, it was quietly congratulated afterwards!

The cast and crew were resurrected shortly afterwards to collect another award, and arguably made a tighter video for their collection speech.

rage [2006]

Rage was a joint, experimental short production undertaken within QUB, to develop and trial aspects of shooting and editing. Groups were given a set, one-page script and the challenge to emulate a genre of their choice.
